He was kissing her. Finally. He’d envisioned this moment so many times and now that it was happening, he didn’t want it to end. She smelled like flowers and citrus, and tasted like chocolate-chip cookies. Her skin was so soft beneath the pads of his thumbs. Her silky hair spilled forward and brushed against his arm. Slowly, her fingers released from his forearms and gently slid up to cup his biceps. He never wanted her to let go.

Everything good and perfect about the moment shattered when she suddenly pulled back. “We can’t.”

His heart pounded in his chest. “What’s wrong?”

She scooted away from him. “This is so not a good idea.”

Her words landed like a sharp left hook. “Why not?”

He’d been doubly sure to ask permission. Ever since she’d walked in tonight. Scratch that, ever since he’d landed in the ER when she was on shift, he’d been attracted to her. All of their interactions had led to this.

Why was she bailing now?

She stood and strode into the kitchen, coffee mug in hand.

“Mia, wait. Don’t go. Not like this,” he called after her, slowly pushing to his feet.

Water splashed in the sink as she rinsed her mug, then returned to the living room.

He scrubbed his hand over his face, desperate to come up with the right words to persuade her to stay.

She moved toward the door without looking at him. That kiss had been incredible. But just as he feared, it scared her. Scared him, too. Because he’d already gone and messed up a good thing. Why had he let this happen? He rubbed his palm against the tightness burning in his chest.

Mia shoved her feet into her boots. “I shouldn’t have come here. This was a huge mistake.”

Her words knifed at him. “No, please don’t say that.”

He couldn’t move, could barely force out the words as she shrugged into her coat, then zipped up the front. Gathering her long hair in one hand, she quickly pulled it free from her collar. He tracked the path of her hair as it cascaded over her shoulder.

“I’m sorry, Gus. I really appreciate you being here for me when I needed someone to—” She stopped abruptly and shook her head, then pressed her palms to her cheeks. “What have I done?”

His disbelief morphed into anger. Was this about Colin and Tracy? “We didn’t do anything wrong, Mia.”

Her face fell. “Don’t you understand? You have a daughter and a life on the other side of the state. I have family drama and a job and people depending on me. You work in one of the most dangerous professions in the world. We’re all wrong for each other. I’m sorry. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

Yeah, too late.

He bit back the words and braced his aching arm against his chest. He’d learned from dealing with Liesel not to say anything else to set a woman off. She’d clearly made up her mind. So what could he possibly come up with to persuade her to stay?

It was time to retreat.
